There are many ways to reduce your energy bill, but one of the easiest and quickest ways is to optimize your air conditioning thermostat habit.
It may be comfortable to leave your thermostat setting at 70 degrees all day – who doesn’t want to come home to a cool house? But nobody wants to pay higher bills than necessary, either. Turning back your thermostat by approximately 9 degrees every time you leave your home for at least 8 hours can save up to 10% on your energy bill over the year! Generally, figure out your feel-good temperature and make it the lowest you ever set your thermostat.
This is where programmable thermostats come in handy. Rather than manually turning your thermostat up or down whenever you get home or leave, you can program your thermostat to change the temperature based on your daily routine. This might include turning it off completely, so you can open your windows when it cools off at night while you’re asleep. Just remember to close them and turn the air conditioning back on in the morning after you wake up.
Did you know, heat can also come in through closed windows? Blinds or a window covering can be a quick fix. This prevents your thermostat from getting confused by the sunlight which creates heat and makes your AC believe it’s warmer than it really is in your home.
As with all important things in life, it helps to make sure everything is running smoothly and efficiently. Schedule regular maintenance, avoid placing appliances near your thermostat (i.e. the heat generated from them will confuse your system) and vacuum your registers regularly to make sure your airflow is functioning at 100%.
