AC Tune-Up in the Quad Cities: What’s Included, What It Costs, and When to Book

A technician providing routine AC maintenance in the Quad Cities.

The most common emergency AC call we get in June is from a homeowner whose system ran fine all last summer and then quit on the first hot day of the new season. Most of the time, a spring tune-up would have caught it. Here’s exactly what a tune-up covers, what you should expect to pay, and why booking before Memorial Day is the right move.

What Is an AC Tune-Up?

A tune-up is a preventive maintenance visit, not a repair call. The goal is to clean and inspect your cooling system before it runs hard all summer, so small problems get found when they’re still small. It’s different from a service call, which responds to a specific symptom. A tune-up is about making sure the system is in good shape before there’s a reason to call.

Think of it the same way you think about an oil change. You don’t wait for the engine to break down.

What’s Included in a Doug’s AC Tune-Up

Here’s what our technicians cover during a standard cooling maintenance visit.

Electrical and Controls Check

  • Test capacitors, contactors, and disconnect
  • Check thermostat calibration and wiring connections
  • Verify safety controls are functioning correctly

Capacitors are one of the most common single-point failures in a cooling system. A capacitor that tests weak in May is one that dies in July. Catching it during a tune-up costs a fraction of an emergency repair call.

Refrigerant and Coil Inspection

  • Check refrigerant levels and note if a recharge is needed (recharge is billed separately)
  • Clean the evaporator coil (indoor unit)
  • Inspect the condenser coil (outdoor unit) for debris, damage, or buildup

A dirty evaporator coil can reduce system efficiency by 10 to 15 percent. It also forces the compressor to work harder than it should, which shortens its life. A compressor replacement costs several times what a full tune-up costs.

Airflow and Ductwork

  • Check blower motor and belt (where applicable)
  • Measure airflow at supply and return vents
  • Inspect visible ductwork for leaks or disconnected sections

Poor airflow is one of the most common causes of uneven cooling in Quad Cities homes. One room cold, another room uncomfortable, and the thermostat set the same for both. That’s usually an airflow issue, and it’s usually fixable.

Drain and Pan

  • Clear the condensate drain line
  • Inspect the drain pan for cracks or standing water

A clogged condensate drain causes water to back up into the system. In a finished basement in Bettendorf or Davenport, that can mean water damage before you realize anything is wrong.

Outdoor Unit

  • Clean condenser fins
  • Check refrigerant lines for insulation wear
  • Inspect fan motor and blade

The outdoor unit gets hit with everything the Quad Cities summer produces: cottonwood fluff, grass clippings, heavy storms, and weeks of 90-degree heat. Keeping it clean lets the refrigerant cycle run the way it’s designed to.

Filter Check

  • Inspect the air filter and replace if needed (filter cost is separate)

We’ll check it during the visit, but a standard 1-inch filter should be checked by the homeowner every month during cooling season. A clogged filter is the most preventable AC problem there is.

If we find something during the tune-up, a weak capacitor, low refrigerant, a cracked drain pan, we’ll tell you before we fix anything. You’ll know exactly what’s needed and what it costs before we proceed.

How Much Does an AC Tune-Up Cost in the Quad Cities?

A one-time tune-up visit from Doug’s is about $150. That covers the full inspection and cleaning listed above. Refrigerant recharge and any replacement parts are additional if needed.

For homeowners who want year-round coverage, our maintenance plans are usually the better value.

Silver Plan: $250/year
Two visits per year: one for your cooling system in spring, one for heating in fall. That breaks down to $125 per visit, and the fall heating tune-up is included at no extra cost.

Gold Plan: $340/year
Same two visits, plus 10 percent off all parts and labor throughout the year, no after-hours fees regardless of when you call, and priority scheduling when the calendar fills up. If your system is eight years old or older, the labor discount typically pays for the difference between Silver and Gold within a single service call.

New plan signups currently receive 10 percent off the first year. Contact us for details.

When Should You Schedule an AC Tune-Up?

The best window is late March through May, before the first heat wave of the season. In the Quad Cities, temperatures regularly reach the mid-80s by mid-May. Book in April or early May and you get your pick of appointment slots. Book in June and you’re competing with everyone who waited too long.

That said, if it’s already June and you haven’t scheduled a tune-up, go ahead and book it. A summer tune-up still catches problems before they turn into failures. Waiting until fall isn’t a better option.

Our maintenance plan customers get automatic scheduling reminders and priority access to spring slots. You don’t have to remember to call.

What Happens If You Skip the Tune-Up?

The risk isn’t usually one dramatic failure. It’s gradual degradation that costs more over time.

A dirty condenser coil makes the compressor run hotter than it should, shortening its life year by year. A weak capacitor cycles on and off until it finally fails at peak demand. A slightly low refrigerant charge forces the compressor to work harder and slowly chips away at its lifespan. None of these announce themselves with a warning light. They just cost you more, eventually.

Most of these issues are inexpensive to fix at a tune-up. They become much more expensive when they’re caught at an emergency call in July. If your system is already struggling, start with our AC troubleshooting guide.

There’s also the warranty question. Most HVAC manufacturers require documented annual maintenance to keep equipment warranties valid. Skipping a tune-up doesn’t just risk the equipment. It can void coverage you already paid for.

Doug’s Maintenance Plans: Silver and Gold

Both plans are built around two service visits per year. Spring covers the cooling system. Fall covers heating. That’s the full picture for both seasons.

Silver ($250/yr): Two visits, full cleaning and inspection at each one. Straightforward coverage with no extras.

Gold ($340/yr): Same two visits, plus 10 percent off all parts and labor for the entire year, no overtime charges regardless of when you call, and priority scheduling when spring slots fill up. If you’ve needed a repair call in the last two years, Gold almost certainly pays for itself.

Most homeowners in Moline, Davenport, and Rock Island with systems older than eight years find that the Gold plan covers its own cost in one service call. The labor discount adds up faster than most people expect.

New signups get 10 percent off the first year.
